Big Drama Indoors: The Best Indoor Plants For All Your Styling Needs

Indoor plants have a wonderful way of making a house feel alive. They soften corners, freshen the air visually, and bring that little bit of garden magic inside — especially in winter when we tend to spend more time indoors.

At my place, I’m always drawn to plants with big leaves. They bring instant drama and structure to a room, almost like a piece of living sculpture. For a well-lit spot, Strelitzia nicolai is hard to beat. Its large, paddle-shaped leaves give that lush, tropical feel and it can completely transform an empty corner.

For darker areas, Spathiphyllum ‘Sensation’ is one of my favourites. It has those generous, glossy leaves that still feel bold and architectural, but copes better with lower light than many other statement plants. The bonus with big leaves is that they’re easy to clean too — a quick wipe with a damp cloth and they’re back to looking fresh.

If you’re just starting out with indoor plants, monsteras and philodendrons are great options. They’re forgiving, beautiful and give you plenty of impact without being too fussy. Pothos is another brilliant one for beginners, especially if you want something that trails from a shelf or hangs softly from a pot.

How to look after indoor plants

The biggest mistake with indoor plants is often loving them a little too much. Most don’t want constant watering, and soggy potting mix is one of the quickest ways to send them backwards. Before you water, push your finger into the potting mix and check the moisture below the surface. If it still feels damp, leave it a few more days. If it feels dry, give it a proper drink and let the excess drain away.

Every now and then, give them a shower — literally. Pop them under a gentle rinse to wash dust from the leaves and replicate that feeling of rainfall. It helps them breathe, keeps the foliage looking glossy, and makes the whole plant feel refreshed.

Think of indoor plants as part of the room, not just decoration. Choose the right one for the light you have, don’t smother it with too much love, keep those leaves clean, and they’ll reward you with greenery, texture and a little daily dose of calm.
