One of the questions I get asked all the time is, "Where do I even start with creating a healthier home?"
The truth is, Charlie and I certainly haven't got everything perfect, and we definitely didn't change everything overnight. Most of what we've learned has come through lots of research, chatting to experts... and making a few mistakes along the way. So I thought I'd share five things I personally wouldn't buy again—and what I'd choose instead.
1. Heavily Fragranced Cleaning Products
Years ago, I thought if a cleaning spray smelled like a tropical fruit salad for three days afterwards, it must be doing a good job.
Now I know better.
What I'd choose instead:
Look for products that are naturally fragranced with essential oils and have simple, easy-to-understand ingredient lists. Your home can still smell beautifully fresh without relying on synthetic fragrance that hangs around long after you've finished cleaning.
2. Plastic Chopping Boards (When They're Old and Scarred)
I still use chopping boards every day—but once plastic ones become deeply scratched, they become much harder to clean properly.
What I'd choose instead:
A quality timber chopping board is one of my favourite kitchen investments. Not only do they look beautiful left out on the bench, but many hardwoods naturally resist bacteria when they're properly cleaned and cared for. Plus, they only get better with age. Just be careful with white timber you choose, as some are glued together using formaldehyde!
3. Cheap Synthetic Bedding
Considering we spend around a third of our lives in bed, I think our bedding deserves a little more thought than it often gets.
What I'd choose instead:
Natural fibres like bamboo, cotton or linen are breathable, comfortable and feel beautiful to sleep in. I also look for OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification, which means the fabric has been tested for a wide range of harmful substances. It's one of those little labels that gives me extra peace of mind.
4. Indoor Air Fresheners
This one might surprise you.
I used to think those little plug-ins and automatic sprays were making the house smell "clean". In reality, they were usually just covering up odours.
What I'd choose instead:
Fresh flowers, bowls of citrus, eucalyptus from the garden, naturally scented candles made with quality ingredients, or simply finding and fixing the source of the smell in the first place. Your home should smell like... your home.
5. Furniture That Wasn't Built to Last
I've become much more intentional about buying less—but buying better.
What I'd choose instead:
Solid timber furniture, quality upholstery and timeless pieces that can move from house to house. Not only is it often the more sustainable choice, but there's something lovely about filling your home with pieces that tell a story instead of following a trend.
Charlie always says the best gardens get better with age. I think the same is true for homes.
The takeaway...
Creating a healthier home isn't about throwing everything out and starting again. It's about making better choices as things naturally need replacing.
That's exactly how we've done it.
One thoughtful swap at a time, and before you know it, you've created a home that not only looks beautiful... but feels good to live in too. ✨
