Helichrysum amorginum — Everlasting Daisy
If you love silver foliage, Helichrysum amorginum is a little beauty. It forms a compact mound of soft, silvery-grey leaves, topped with clusters of creamy-yellow everlasting flowers. It's a fantastic plant for adding texture and contrast to a sunny garden, particularly alongside lavender, rosemary and other Mediterranean-style plants.
How to grow it
-
☀️ Position: Full sun is essential for compact growth and the best foliage colour.
-
🌱 Soil: Excellent drainage is a must. It thrives in sandy, gravelly or relatively poor soils.
-
💧 Water: Water while establishing, then only occasionally. It's very drought tolerant once settled.
-
🌼 Flowers: Produces clusters of papery, creamy-yellow flowers, generally from spring into summer.
-
🪴 Pots: Perfect for containers, rockeries and the front of garden beds, where its silver foliage can really shine.
-
✂️ Maintenance: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact, rounded shape. Avoid cutting hard into old woody stems.
CHARLIE'S No.1 TIP:
Don't kill it with kindness! This is a plant that thrives on neglect. Too much water, rich compost or fertiliser can actually do more harm than good. Give it sunshine, sharp drainage and a relatively lean soil, and you'll be rewarded with beautiful silver foliage all year round. 🌿
