I spotted this Clivia miniata while out on a walk and had to take a photo. Those brilliant orange flowers glowing against the dark green, strappy foliage are hard to miss — particularly because Clivias are happiest flowering in those tricky shady parts of the garden.
How to grow it
-
🌤️ Position: Shade or filtered light is ideal. Protect it from hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
-
🌱 Soil: Rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter.
-
💧 Water: Water regularly through the warmer months, but allow the soil to dry slightly between watering.
-
🌸 Flowers: Expect clusters of orange, trumpet-shaped flowers from late winter into spring.
-
🌿 Feeding: Give them a feed in spring and again through the growing season to encourage healthy foliage and flowering.
-
✂️ Maintenance: Very little! Remove old flower stems and damaged leaves, and divide established clumps when they become overcrowded.
CHARLIE’S No.1 TIP:
Don’t give Clivias too much love. They actually flower beautifully when slightly crowded, so don’t be in a hurry to divide them or move them into a bigger pot. A little root restriction can mean a much better display of flowers.
