Bathrooms can be one of the best places in the house for indoor plants. They’re warm, humid and often a little more protected, which makes them feel like a mini rainforest — especially for plants that come from tropical environments.
Indoor plants aren’t just there to look good either. Research suggests they can help improve our sense of wellbeing, reduce stress and make indoor spaces feel calmer and more restorative. The RHS also notes that bathrooms and kitchens often have higher humidity than living rooms, which many tropical houseplants absolutely love.
So if you’ve got a bathroom with a bit of natural light, this is the perfect place to add some greenery.
Peace Lily
My first pick is the peace lily. It’s lush, forgiving and those glossy green leaves instantly soften a bathroom. It will cope with lower light better than many indoor plants, but it still needs some filtered natural light to really thrive. Keep the potting mix lightly moist, but don’t drown it — peace lilies are dramatic and will let you know when they’re thirsty by drooping a little.
Fern
Next would be a fern. Bathrooms and ferns are a natural match because ferns love humidity. A Boston fern or maidenhair fern can look beautiful on a shelf, windowsill or hanging from above, where the foliage can spill and soften the space. The trick is consistency. Don’t let them dry out completely, and keep them away from harsh direct sun.
Pothos
My third pick is pothos. If you’re new to indoor plants, this is one of the easiest places to start. It trails beautifully from a shelf, is fairly forgiving if you forget a water now and then, and brings that lovely relaxed, leafy feeling without demanding too much attention. It prefers bright, indirect light but will tolerate lower-light bathrooms too.
The key with bathroom plants is not to assume humidity replaces watering. Check the potting mix with your finger before you water. If it feels damp, leave it alone. If it feels dry, give it a proper drink and let the excess drain away.
Every now and then, give the leaves a gentle rinse in the shower. It washes off dust, mimics natural rainfall and keeps the foliage looking fresh. Just let the plants drain properly afterwards so they’re not sitting in water.
A bathroom plant doesn’t need to be complicated. Choose the right plant for the light you have, enjoy the humidity working in your favour, and suddenly the most practical room in the house feels a little more like a retreat. 🌿
