A pot plant is one of those gifts that says, I really thought about you. Not grabbed on the way in, not last-minute — but chosen with care. And that’s where the magic is.
Start with the person. Are they a devoted indoor plant parent or someone who loves pottering in the garden on weekends? A peace lily or lush indoor foliage plant like a philodendron is perfect for a homebody who likes greenery without too much fuss. A hydrangea works beautifully for someone who enjoys getting their hands dirty outdoors but don't be fooled by flowers. Real plant lovers will appreciate it if you can pick a plant for their garden regardless of if it's doing its thing at the time of purchase or not. And for the so-called “brown thumbs”? You honestly can’t go wrong with a succulent — tough, forgiving and quietly stylish.
Once you’ve chosen the plant, don’t rush the pot. This is where the gift really levels up. Pick something that suits their style — earthy terracotta, soft ceramics, or something bold and sculptural. My favorite pot is the one my son, Hart, made for me on his 3D printer and inside is an amazing pitcher plant - the perfect plant and pot combo!
Make sure the pot has good drainage, then pot it up properly using a high-quality potting mix. That small step makes a huge difference, giving the plant the best possible start once it leaves your hands.
One of my favourite touches is handwriting a few simple care notes. Nothing complicated — just where it likes to live, how often to water, and maybe a reassuring line like “it’s okay if you forget it sometimes”. It turns a lovely gift into a personal one, and it takes the guesswork out for the recipient.
A pot plant keeps growing long after the wrapping paper’s gone. Choose it thoughtfully, pot it well, add that handwritten note — and you’re giving something that lasts, leaf by leaf 🌱
