The Three Biggest Questions Charlie Gets Asked

1. How do you look after citrus?
Everyone wants lemons and limes. Start with rich, well-draining soil. In sand, add compost and manure; in clay, add gypsum or compost. Water well to establish, strip flowers in year one so the roots bulk up, and mulch thickly (but not against the trunk). Hot leaves, cool roots—that’s the citrus mantra. Feed heavily: slow-release pellets each season, plus liquid feed every couple of weeks.

2. What’s good for a low-maintenance garden?
There’s no such thing as zero-maintenance (even fake plants need dusting). But close enough? Ornamental grasses like miscanthus or pennisetum—just cut them back in winter. Salvias and Mexican sage flower for ages with barely a sip of water. For a sleek look, succulents like agave and crassula thrive on neglect. Free-draining soil is key.

3. How do you get the perfect lawn?
The Aussie dream: bowling-green flat. The recipe is simple—free-draining soil plus sun. Six hours minimum. Sandy loam with up to 30% compost is ideal. In shade, go for buffalo. Then mow weekly, feed seasonally with lawn fertiliser, and water in heatwaves. That’s it—easy.
