Creating a healthier home sparks so many conversations — mostly around where to even begin without feeling overwhelmed. So, I thought we’d build on that with a few simple, realistic swaps you can start making at home.
Because wellness doesn’t come from doing everything perfectly… it comes from making small, better choices over time (and not losing your mind in the process).
1. Rethink Your Pots & Pans
If you only change one thing, this is a big one. Many non-stick pans (particularly older ones) are coated in materials like Teflon, which can release harmful chemicals when overheated or scratched.
Easy swap:
Move towards stainless steel, cast iron, ceramic or enamel-coated cookware. They last longer, perform beautifully once you get used to them, and don’t come with the same concerns. Yes, things might stick a little at first… but so does every new habit. We use an Australian brand called Solidteknics which is wrought iron. They are made out of one piece of Australian metal and will literally last generations. We love them. And we especially love that they shouldn’t ever end up in landfill!
2. Swap Plastic for Glass (Where You Can)
Plastic containers are convenient — but they’re not ideal, especially when heated. Chemicals can leach into food, particularly when microwaved.
Real life tip:
We’ve been slowly swapping to glass containers at home. Leo is currently very into his high-protein lunches (inspired by all his friends), and while everyone else is heating theirs up in plastic at school… we’re sending his in glass. He’s accepted it (mostly), and I feel better knowing it’s a safer option.
3. Upgrade Your Cleaning Routine (Properly)
As I said last time, it’s really important to do a cleaning product audit — because what we use every day matters.
Easy swap:
Look for plant-based, low-tox cleaning products, or simplify things with vinegar, bicarbonate soda and essential oils. You don’t need a cupboard full of products — just a few that actually work (and don’t leave a chemical cloud behind).
4. Be Mindful of What You’re Sleeping On
We touched on this before, but it’s worth repeating. Mattresses, pillows and bedding can contain synthetic materials and chemical treatments that we’re exposed to for hours every night.
Easy swap:
When it’s time to replace items, look for natural fibres, low-tox materials and Oeko-Tex certification. No need to overhaul everything — just make more considered choices as you go.
5. Rethink “Fragrance” in the Home
Candles, diffusers and sprays can make a home smell beautiful — but many contain synthetic fragrances that linger in the air.
Easy swap:
Choose natural candles (soy, beeswax) or essential oil diffusers instead. Or simply open the windows and let fresh air do the work — it’s still one of the best (and cheapest) options.
The takeaway?
Start where you can, swap what makes sense, and keep it simple. Because wellness at home should feel doable… not like another full-time job. ✨
