Cloud Dancer: Why Soft White Is Having Its Moment

If you’ve always loved white interiors, this might feel like a quiet vindication. Pantone’s 2026 Colour of the Year, Cloud Dancer, is a soft, warm white that feels gentle, calming and timeless — not cold, not stark, and definitely not boring. Each year, Pantone selects a Colour of the Year based on global cultural, design and lifestyle influences, and that colour quietly filters through fashion, interiors, product design and beyond — shaping what we see, buy and love throughout the year ahead.

For me, white interiors are deeply personal. Growing up, my mum, Angela Belle, had a home filled with whites and neutrals — layered with glass, soft furnishings and different textures for visual interest. It was light, bright and airy, and it left me with a lifelong love (and a touch of nostalgia) for white colour schemes. That said… white isn’t always easy. It can feel cold and stark when not used properly. It’s beautiful when done well though, so here are a few tricks to making it work for you.

How to Use Cloud Dancer at Home (Without It Feeling Flat)

1. Choose the Right White
Not all whites are created equal. Cloud Dancer has warmth to it, which makes it far more forgiving than cooler whites that can feel clinical.

Tip: Always test white in your own light. Morning sun, afternoon glare and evening lighting will all affect how it reads.

2. Texture Is Everything
White-on-white only works when there’s variation. Think linen, wool, timber, stone, glass and ceramics — this is what gives depth and interest.

Tip: If everything is smooth and glossy, a white space can feel cold. Mix finishes for warmth and softness.

3. Layer Tones, Not Just One White
The most beautiful white interiors use a mix of off-whites, soft creams and gentle neutrals rather than a single shade everywhere.

Tip: Use Cloud Dancer on walls, then introduce warmer or deeper whites through furniture, rugs and soft furnishings.

4. Let Natural Materials Shine
White is the perfect backdrop for natural materials. Timber, rattan, leather and stone all stand out beautifully against it.

Tip: Even one strong natural element — a timber table or woven rug — can anchor a white space.

5. Keep It Practical
White homes don’t have to be precious. Performance fabrics, washable slipcovers and durable finishes make white liveable — even with kids, pets and real life. We had a white IKEA slipcovered couch for years that worked well because it was machine washable and  I had a spare cover to alternate with.

Tip: Choose where to go “perfect white” and where to be more relaxed. Balance is key.

The takeaway?
Cloud Dancer reminds us that white doesn’t have to be stark to be sophisticated. When layered thoughtfully, it creates spaces that feel calm, welcoming and timeless — just like the home that inspired me growing up. For me, it’s not just a trend; it’s a return to something familiar and beautiful.
